Australian beer consumption in 2009 fell to levels below those seen in 1949, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said Tuesday. Australians consumed 4.62 liters (1.22 gallons) of beer per head in 2009, compared to 5.25 liters per head in 1949. In contrast, wine production has increased from 1.67 liters per head from 1969, when data first became available, to 3.73 liters per head in 2009. “The latest data certainly has implications for the listed beverage companies” like Foster’s Group Ltd. , said economists at CommSec. “Changing consumer trends will determine how successful strategy is over coming years,” they said. Foster’s shares were down 0.4% in Sydney.
