Planting areas of barley in China for beer production will rise this year, due to the barley price hike in 2010 and farmers’ optimistic outlook for the beer barley market, predicted an industry expert.
Bai Puyi, secretary general of the China Alcoholic Drinks Industry Association, said that the output of the barley for beer production was about 1.21 million metric tonnes in 2010, of which, Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Jiangsu, and Xinjiang respectively contributed 350,000 metric tonnes, 300,000 tonnes, 300,000 tonnes and 180,000 tonnes.
Bai predicted that beer barley output would reach 1.5 million tonnes this year, regardless of natural disasters.
According to Bai, Gansu and Xinjiang this year will maintain their planting areas close to 2010 levels, while the planting area in Inner Mongolia and Jiangsu will increase slightly.
