Lion’s Canterbury brewery will not be opened again after the February 22 earthquake. 38 workers have to look now for new jobs, the company announced yesterday. The earthquake in February has warped the foundations of most ofthe nine buildings which cover the 10-hectare complex and caused a damage which make a new start of beer production at the site not economical. The production of beers like Stella Artois Legere, Becks and Guinness will be transferred to the other plants of the group. Lion plans to invest $28m in its Dunedin and Auckland breweries to make up for the lacking capacity. However the site in Canterbury will not entirely be abandoned by the brewery. Lion announced to build a $15 million warehouse and distribution centre on part of the site.
