A new group chief brewer has been appointed at SABMiller to replace the present one, who plans to retire in July, the company said on Wednesday.

Spokesman Tony van Kralingen said in a statement the company was fortunate to have Prof Katherine Smart as group chief brewer and praised her “outstanding talent”.

“She has a wealth of experience and shares our passion for operational excellence and brewing beers of exceptional quality,” he said.

Smart works for SABMiller as professor of brewing science. She has experience as head of bio-sciences at the University of Nottingham and has acted as a scientific adviser to several international companies.

Her accolades include the Institute of Brewing and Distilling Cambridge Prize.

Smart would take up her new role from June 1, when her predecessor Barry Axcell retires.

“I would like to use this opportunity to express my personal appreciation to Barry Axcell who retires after almost 35 years of distinguished and exceptional service,” Van Kralingen said.
