Global hop market

A local alternative to mass beer suggested by independent brewers has been successful and is now altering the global market. Beer is becoming more diversified, so transnational companies have to accept the new game rules and to switch focus to young and fast growing markets. All these processes increased the demand for aroma and bitter hop as well as their acreage expansion on two continents. However now there appeared a downward trend of alcohol consumption in the world, so even special sorts can soon turn to be sufficient. In this connection the dynamic American hop market is already facing some problems. EU hop producers have become more cautious, they are not racing to exceed the demand and look forward with more confidence, judging by the contract terms.

Hop Market in Russia

Germany still dominates the Russian market, yet over the recent two years one has been able observe a continuous success of Czech hop suppliers. Their expansion and growing popularity of hops from the United States became the drivers of supplies growth in 2016 despite the preceding modest harvest crop in the EU, as well as the factor of relative stability in 2017. In this connection, in 2017, the ratio of the varieties continued to shift towards the aroma ones, and the supplies of Magnum hop and other alpha varieties were reduced. However, the import of bitter hop pellets is partially replaced by extracts, especially from the major beer manufacturers. Total volumes of alpha acid supplies, according to our estimation, decreased by approximately 5% and returned to the level of 2015. Barth Haas Group continues dominating the hop products market; HVG also increased its weight. At the same time, Morris Hanbury significantly reduced the supplies in 2017.

China Brew & China Beverage to move to Shanghai

The next China Brew & China Beverage (CBB) will not be held in Beijing, but in Shanghai. In future the exhibition venue will be the Shanghai New International Exhibition Centre (SNIEC). And the dates have already been agreed upon: October 11 to 14, 2016. The exhibition center in Shanghai offers a better infrastructure, and another reason is that most of the beverage industry companies are based in this southern Chinese metropolis. The change to the exhibition venue was agreed in cooperation with the VDMA, and the partners of drinktec.

Dr. Reinhard Pfeiffer, Deputy CEO of Messe Mьnchen International, and Richard Clemens, Managing Director of the Food Processing and Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association (Fachverband Nahrungsmittelmaschinen und Verpackungsmaschinen) affiliated in the VDMA (Germanyґs engineering federation), spoke of a step in the right direction: "With this move to Shanghai, we want to make an already highly successful project even more successful. By being closer to the geographical heart of the beverages industry, we expect further synergy effects to be generated for the event," said Pfeiffer. "The response we have had so far from our exhibitors and from the industry has been positive across the board," emphasized Richard Clemens.

CBB 2014 has got off to a successful start. A total of 708 exhibitors from 25 countries – thatґs five percent more than last time - are putting on a presentation of their prodcuts and solutions at the New China International Exhibition Center (NCIC) in Beijing. 248 of these exhibitors are from outside China. The space taken up by non-Chinese exhibitors is 9,000 square meters net, or 13 percent higher than at the last event: As such the international exhibitors account for around one quarter of the total exhibition space at this yearґs CBB. More than 50,000 visitors are expected to come along to CBB 2014. The show comes to a close on October 16.

The organizer of China Brew & China Beverage is the Beijing Zhongqing Heli Machinery Equipment Co. Messe Mьnchen International, the organizer of drinktec, the leading world fair, and its Chinese subsidiary MMI Shanghai have been co-organizers of CBB since 2011. They are responsible for the international exhibiotrs and for visitor acquisiton in a range of Asian countries.
