Tension prevailed at Irayancode, near Vithura, on Sunday when nearly 200 residents mounted a strong protest against the opening of a retail liquor outlet of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation (Bevco) there.

The agitators, who included women and children, staged a demonstration against the relocation of an existing outlet of the Bevco from KPSM Junction at Vithura to a residential area near Irayancode, near the Vithura-Palode route.

The employees of the Bevco were prevented from unloading the stock that was brought to be arranged at the new outlet. With the situation threatening to go out of control, the Vithura police reached the spot. A few officials of the Bevco also arrived in an attempt to pacify the protesters.

Assurance

The agitators finally called off their demonstration after being assured by the officials that the outlet would function from the previous facility and that it would not be shifted to the new location.
