Compania Cervecera consolidates its support for sustainable development with an investment of 3 million Euro

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, December 9th, 2011.- Compania Cervecera consolidates its support for sustainable development with an investment of 3 million Euro in this area during last year. With this line of action, the company reiterates its commitment, carried out for the last nine years that allowed assigning a sum around 26 million Euro.

As it is shown in the 2011 Sustainable Development Report, recently published by the company, Compania Cervecera has intensified its efforts in the recent months trying to minimise the company’s footprint in its environment, bearing in mind the high environmental sensibility in Canarias. This way, the company wants to boost the commitment acquired in this field nine years ago that has allowed minimising the environmental impact.

In this case, the increase of the waste recycled above 97% is among the main achievements of this year, what allowed minimising the quantity sent to the dump. To that, it has to be added the reduction in the CO2 emissions in a grand total of 1,219 tons as a consequence of the reduction in fuel consumption, translated in a reduction of the energy consumption for every litre of beer produced.

The significance of these actions is clear through the importance that the company has in Canarias, translated in the generation of an economical value of 136.4 million Euro last year, completed with 7,100 jobs, direct, indirect and induced, and a contribution of added value to the economy of 210 million Euro. Also, it is worth mentioning the 39 million Euro of the estimated sales to a total of 644 local suppliers.

On the other hand, the fight against irresponsible alcohol consumption has been other of the fields of work of the company, materialised through internal training actions, communication and prevention of risk groups, as well as the promotion of alcohol-free beer among the drivers.

Among the measures of sustainable development supported by the company is the involvement in different programs in collaboration with different city halls of the islands to energise a very important sector for Canarias as the hospitality sector. In this case stands out the creation of tapas routes in different islands with the intention of supporting a sector seriously affected by the reduction in the spending in general, which plays an essential role in the economy of the Islands because of the income as well as the jobs.

Other of the actions carried out has been aimed to the corporate social investment, with the support to more than 30 non-governmental organisations, to which the company have given 1% of its benefits before taxes. Within this framework stands out the collaboration of the company in the program ‘Deporte para todos,’ aimed to the promotion of sporting activities among the disabled people in the south of Tenerife.

The training of its employees has been one of the pillars in which the company has worked. The results in this field allowed reach a ratio of five days per worker, as well as of an increment of the actions in this area that has allowed reaching 85% of the staff. For it, the internal team of trainers has added to their daily work the commitment of sharing their knowledge.
