WA grain growers to gain from SE Asian beer boom

A subsidiary of the grain handler, CBH, says it is building a multi-million dollar malt milling plant in Vietnam to capitalise on South-East Asia’s growing taste for beer.

Interflour says the project will source malting barley from WA farmers, which will be exported to the plant, called Intermalt, then sold on to be used in beer brewing.

Intermalt’s General Manager in Vietnam, James Kirton, says the plant, worth more than $70 million will provide significant opportunities for WA growers.

“The beer market in Vietnam is growing at between twelve and sixteen per cent and per capita, beer consumption is growing as well,” he said.

“So there is a great growth story for the beer market and obviously malt is required to service that.”
