Pentair, a global leader in filtration and process technologies for the food & beverage industries, is presenting the latest generation Beer Membrane Filtration (BMF) product line at the Brau Beviale 2014 (November 11-13) in Nuremberg, Germany. In recent years Pentair’s BMF technology has gained significant market share as an alternative to diatomaceous earth (DE). Since the introduction of Pentair’s BMF in 2002, all major brewing groups have installed BMF technology and there are more than 70 worldwide references. 70 million hectoliters of beer are filtered by BMF each year.

Pentair is continuously working on further improving its advanced BMF system, which resulted in a BMF-18 product line that sets new standards in efficiency, sustainability and smart design. Pentair’s BMF-18 is now equipped with an increased number of proven Pentair components and technologies. Along with S?dmo valves & components and Haffmans quality control equipment, a CPM Sterile Filter, type PSF, is now standard equipment in the BMF’s carbon dioxide (CO2) supply line. In addition, Pentair hygienic pumps have been integrated into the BMF-18. This enables Pentair to provide our customers a BMF solution that ensures even higher system security, along with advantages in Total Cost of Ownership.

Increased sustainability through caustic reuse

For BMF, operating costs are mainly determined by consumption of utilities and chemicals, and replacing the membranes once every two to three years. To filter the highest-quality beer with the lowest financial and environmental impact, Pentair’s BMF-18 is now equipped with an optional caustic reuse unit. The unit allows system operators to collect caustic solution from the Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) procedure and reuse. This reduces caustic consumption by 30 percent, along with significant water savings.

BMF-18 Compact gets even more compact To meet the specific requirements of mid-size breweries with annual production of up to 1.5 million hectoliters, Pentair provides a turnkey BMF solution that offers all the advantages of the original BMF concept at a significantly lower investment cost. The BMF-18 Compact now comes standard with Pentair’s proven blending and carbonization unit, the CarboBlender, which results in CAPEX savings and an even more compact BMF system. The BMF-18 Compact’s robust design allows for assembly prior to transportation. While the system is being built and tested at the factory, the brewery can prepare the necessary piping. In the brewery, the BMF-18 Compact is installed as a plug-and-play system and tailored to the brewery’s specific conditions. This significantly shortens the commissioning period and makes it possible to filter the first beer one week after arrival at the brewery.
