India. Beer sale to pick up as summer sets in Vizag

As the mercury soared to above 38 degree Celsius in the city, sale of beers is set to rise as well.

Officials from the department of prohibition and excise are hoping that an average of nearly 2,500 to 3,000 beer cases will be sold daily in the city during the summer as against the average daily sale of 2,000 beer cases during the rest of the year. (more…)

India. Heineken takes larger swig, ups UB stake to nearly 44 per cent

Dutch brewer Heineken International on Wednesday moved closer to gaining a controlling stake in India’s largest beer manufacturer United Breweries (UB), acquiring 4.2 million equity shares through bulk deals on the stock exchange. Heineken spent around Rs 358 crore to increase its stake in the beer company to 43.97% from 42.38%. (more…)

Even as a consortium of banks led by State Bank of India (SBI) is struggling to recover loan dues amounting to Rs 9,091 crore from UB Group chairman Vijay Mallya, the Commercial Taxes Department of Karnataka has issued an order to recover tax dues amounting to several lakhs of rupees from Mallya-controlled United Breweries Limited (UBL). Small companies that produce beer, cider, perry and mead up to 30 thousand hectolitres per year will be exempted from the need to connect to USAIS (Unified State Automated Information System). In spite of state preferences, they had to connect to the accounting system to monitor shipments to distributors.
