US: Federal small brewer excise tax bills introduced in both chambers of Congress

The Brewers Association (BA) on Wednesday announced that legislation seeking to enact a graduated beer excise tax rate of $3.50 and $16.00 for America’s small brewers has been introduced in both chambers of Congress. The BA is the not-for-profit trade group that represents the majority of U.S. brewing companies. (more…)

Last Monday, it was announced that Chicago’s Goose Island Brewery is being acquired by Anheuser-Busch for the sum of $38.8 million dollars. Goose Island (tagline “Chicago’s craft beer”) produces a number of highly sought-after brews, including Bourbon County Stout and Sofie (a Belgian style farmhouse ale), in addition to their more accessible 312 Urban Wheat and Green Line Pale Ale.
