Sapporo reopenes Chiba brewery after earthquake

Since the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan on March 11, the Chiba brewery of Sapporo was closed. Now the Japanese brewer “estarted to produce beer, though not 100% in operation,” a Sapporo spokesperson said. (more…)

US: Federal small brewer excise tax bills introduced in both chambers of Congress

The Brewers Association (BA) on Wednesday announced that legislation seeking to enact a graduated beer excise tax rate of $3.50 and $16.00 for America’s small brewers has been introduced in both chambers of Congress. The BA is the not-for-profit trade group that represents the majority of U.S. brewing companies. (more…)

Last Monday, it was announced that Chicago’s Goose Island Brewery is being acquired by Anheuser-Busch for the sum of $38.8 million dollars. Goose Island (tagline “Chicago’s craft beer”) produces a number of highly sought-after brews, including Bourbon County Stout and Sofie (a Belgian style farmhouse ale), in addition to their more accessible 312 Urban Wheat and Green Line Pale Ale. SAB stems market share losses
