When he left a job in banking to join a “company that sells fish sauce” in Vietnam, Michael Nguyen’s parents wondered if he was throwing away a lucrative career. Now a big cheese at Masan Group, one of the country’s largest listed companies, the Vietnamese-American seems happy with his gamble. Masan’s brands meet a big chunk of the local demand for pungent sauces, noodles and freeze-dried coffee—and in December the firm accepted a $1.1 billion investment from Singha, a Thai brewer, to help finance an assault on Vietnam’s frothy beer market. “Cardamom ale! It has cardamom; it is an ale,” says a nonplussed Navin Mittal, hands flapping, looking for more beer to try. At this Pune home brewers’ meet, murmurs travel around the table on how this home-brewed ale could have had more of a malt backbone to it. “Perhaps some cool aroma hops to fight the cardamom?” I enquire. India. Ban on gudumba boosts sales of beer in Telangana

A report in The Hans India has stated that a ban on the manufacture and sale of gudumba (illicitly distilled liquor) has witnessed boost in the sale of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and beer in the district of Telangana,. There was 33 per cent jump in the trade of liquor in 2015 than that of previous year. With a view to eliminate gudumba menace from the society and protect poor families, the State government had taken up a special drive and passed strict instruction to all the district officials. Beer production in Kazakhstan to decrease by 3.3% in 2015

According to data of the State Statistics Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the production of beer in the Republic of Kazakhstan has decreased by 3.3% to 47.394 million decalitres by the end of 2015. Despite the reduction, this dynamics is better than in Russia (-5%), Ukraine (-20%), Belarus (-6%) and China (-4%). (more…)

China. CR Snow to sell 1168.3 mln liters of beer in 2015

In 2015, beer sales of the company China Resources Breweries (Holdings) amounted to 1168.3 million liters. This is 1.34% less than in the previous year. At the same time the brewery’s turnover  grew by 0.98% to HK$ 34.82 billion.

India. UBL plans to launch Kingfisher Buzz in all major cities by December

Beer maker United Breweries is looking to introduce its recently launched malt-based ready-to -drink (RTD) beverage ‘Kingfisher Buzz’ in all major cities of the country by this year-end.

Kingfisher Buzz is currently available in two flavours – berry and lychee — in Mumbai, Pune and Thane.

The company plans to add more flavours to expand its portfolio in the segment. (more…)
