Drinkability in ‘session’

This is a promising development. One trend that I’ve been hoping for – lower-alcohol craft beers – seems like it’s beginning to take hold. These are not quite “session beers,’’ by strict definition – that’s an old British classification for beers with less than 4 percent alcohol by volume – but because it’s all but impossible to find good craft beers with such low ABV in this country, these new lower-alcohol brews are being loosely called session beers. US. New Belgium Brewing Announces Can Line Expansion

New Belgium Brewing is pleased to announce it is breaking ground on a 16,000 sq. foot can line addition to its bottling hall. The new system, manufactured by KHS, will increase New Belgium’s canning volume capacity six fold. (more…)

US. Senate Small Brewers Caucus Established

The Brewers Association (BA) shared the news today that the Senate Small Brewers Caucus has been established. The formation of the Caucus was led by Senators Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), who support the role of America’s small and independent brewers as an engine of economic growth in the country. The Portland of the Far East: craft beer is booming in Japan.

Walking through Tokyo’s garish Roppongi district on my first visit to Japan, I found it remarkably easy to ignore the pulsing high-tech signs promoting electronics, movies, and cars. What caught my eye was probably the most modest ad: a tiny bilingual sandwich board that said “Craft Beer Bar.” When I think of Japanese alcohol, sake and mass-produced lagers come to mind. Apart from the excellent Hitachino Nest, I wasn’t aware of any Japanese craft brewers of note. Skeptical, I squeezed down a narrow staircase into a tiny, subterranean bar, expecting nothing more than insight into which foreign craft beers suit the Japanese palate, and possibly a taste of a Hitachino Nest creation that hadn’t yet crossed the Pacific.
