Global hop market

A local alternative to mass beer suggested by independent brewers has been successful and is now altering the global market. Beer is becoming more diversified, so transnational companies have to accept the new game rules and to switch focus to young and fast growing markets. All these processes increased the demand for aroma and bitter hop as well as their acreage expansion on two continents. However now there appeared a downward trend of alcohol consumption in the world, so even special sorts can soon turn to be sufficient. In this connection the dynamic American hop market is already facing some problems. EU hop producers have become more cautious, they are not racing to exceed the demand and look forward with more confidence, judging by the contract terms.

Hop Market in Russia

Germany still dominates the Russian market, yet over the recent two years one has been able observe a continuous success of Czech hop suppliers. Their expansion and growing popularity of hops from the United States became the drivers of supplies growth in 2016 despite the preceding modest harvest crop in the EU, as well as the factor of relative stability in 2017. In this connection, in 2017, the ratio of the varieties continued to shift towards the aroma ones, and the supplies of Magnum hop and other alpha varieties were reduced. However, the import of bitter hop pellets is partially replaced by extracts, especially from the major beer manufacturers. Total volumes of alpha acid supplies, according to our estimation, decreased by approximately 5% and returned to the level of 2015. Barth Haas Group continues dominating the hop products market; HVG also increased its weight. At the same time, Morris Hanbury significantly reduced the supplies in 2017.

N?rnbergMesse: Thorsten B?hm is the new Director of the N?rnbergConvention Center

  • Expert: Learnt the events business from scratch
  • Permanent: Part of the Convention Center Team for twelve years
  • Magnificent: N?rnbergConvention Center among Europe's leaders

The managing directors of N?rnbergMesse, Dr. Roland Fleck and Peter Ottmann, have named Thorsten B?hm as the new Director of the N?rnbergConvention Center. B?hm succeeds Friedhelm Lenz, who has retired after almost thirty years of managing the Center. "We are very excited to have Thorsten B?hm, a real home-grown talent, take on the role," says Dr. Roland Fleck. The N?rnbergConvention Center is one of the major convention and congress centres in Germany and Europe and provides space for over 14,000 people in three areas. In 2011 the N?rnbergConvention Center achieved a turnover of 13.2 million euros.

Thorsten B?hm, Director N?rnbergConvention Center

Thorsten B?hm (38) knows the event business at the N?rnbergConvention Center like nobody else. He has, after all, been a member of the team for twelve years. As a Senior Advisor he was previously responsible for events such as ConSozial, the largest congress and exhibition for the social market in the German-speaking world, or Kommunale, the leading German exhibition and congress for municipal requirements. Thorsten B?hm, an Event Management and Business Administration graduate, worked closely with Friedhelm Lenz, who managed the N?rnbergMesse congress division for over 27 years.

"Business knowledge"

"With Thorsten B?hm we have managed to obtain someone with knowledge of the congress business and who represents what makes the N?rnbergConvention Center special; namely orientation towards customer requirements and the professional expertise of a leading European and German convention centre", says Jan Gerrit Ebener, Member of the N?rnbergMesse Management Board. "Thorsten B?hm therefore represents continuity, which, with regard to high satisfaction, can only be beneficial to the customers".

The N?rnbergConvention Center comprises the NCC West, NCC Mitte and NCC Ost convention centres and provides space for over 14,000 people. The decentralised location of the centre ensures that the exhibition halls are always directly connected and can therefore be used together with the centres. "The convention centres can be used both on their own and in connection with the halls. Event ensembles that are independent of one another can thus take place according to event and customer requirements", says Thorsten B?hm, describing the advantages of the N?rnbergConvention Center.

Events with over 1,000 participants

Major prestigious congresses take place at the N?rnbergConvention Center, for example the International Congress of Hearing Aid Acousticians (Internationaler H?rger?teakustiker-Kongress), the International Congress of German Ophthalmic Surgeons (Internationaler Kongress der deutschen Ophthalmochirurgen) and the DOAG Conference & Exhibition. These congresses often take place with accompanying exhibitions and congress trade fairs (ConSozial and Kommunale) as well as corporate events. It is particularly suitable for events with over 1,000 participants.
