Russia: Positions of Brewing Companies

The review contains an analysis of interim performance of brewers in the first half of 2019. There are rather dynamic changes behind a modest industry growth. Baltika is again experiencing a stage of volumes and market share slid due to competition with AB InBev Efes. Because of the price competition and presence expansion in the modern trade company #2. has come close to the leading position. At the same time sales of Heineken Russia have continued growing which makes the premium part of the portfolio heavier. The market premiumization trend had been also confirmed by import brands. MBC and Zavod Trekhsosenskiy have been the most successful among federal market players. The market share of independent regional brewers and Ochakovo have continued falling as they are being squeezed out by the market leaders at their competitive fields.

Ukrainian beer market 2019: companies and brands

In 2019 beer production and market have been still fluctuating about zero point. However, the past season was successful for brewers judging by the sales profitability. The price mix has improved due to rapid general market premiumization, as well as its particular aspect, the growth of import beer sales. By the season end AB InBev Efes improved its positions considerably. It turned out that consumers had not forgot Efes brands that had to leave the market, but started to recover rapidly. Against the stagnating market that meant sales decline of other companies, in the first place Carlsberg Group that most of all beneficiated from Efes exiting the market. PPB turned out to be stable to branding activity of its competitor and Obolon kept the same volumes and at the moment it is the absolute leader of the economy segment. The share growth of independent producers took place thanks to leading craft breweries, that so far do not have a big market weight, but they are rapidly gaining it.

Brewing industry in Kazakhstan 2019

During the first half of 2019, the majority of Kazakh brewers made their contribution into positive dynamics. Yet it was companies of the lower division, not the two transnational leaders that raised their production and sales. The shares of draft beer and aluminum can which is rapidly squeezing glass bottle out of the market, have been growing. The price segmentation has remained stable despite the substantial rise of retail prices and fluctuations of brand market shares, while the borders between segments have become blurred. The main events in the industry have been: the announced revision of the beer excise policy, launch of BeerKhan brand in the strong beer segment, and most important – purchasing assets of Shymkentbeer by Arasan.

Focussing on the world’s first OMNIUM brewhouse and the regenerative energy supply.

At the BrauBeviale ZIEMANN HOLVRIEKA GmbH will be focussing on nothing less than a technological revolution – the brewhouse concept OMNIUM by ZIEMANN, which was implemented for the first time in a new brewhouse in 2018. The medium-sized Schlossbrauerei Reckendorf in Franconia took over this global pioneering role. In addition, visitors to the new stand 363 in hall 9 can see how the energy supply of a brewery can be converted to regenerative energy sources and thus become self-sufficient. As a renowned supplier of tanks and process technology for the brewing and beverage industry, ZIEMANN HOLVRIEKA will also present itself as a provider of overall solutions and components from the malt intake to the bright beer tank cellar.

OMNIUM by ZIEMANN – flexible, efficient, forward-looking
The decisive core component of the advanced brewhouse design OMNIUM by ZIEMANN is the dynamic lautering system NESSIE by ZIEMANN, which was presented for the first time at the BrauBeviale in 2016. In a continuous process, the mash is separated into wort and spent grains and the extract is obtained by a target-oriented guiding of the generated streams. This results in short process times, high yields and excellent wort qualities.

The decoupling of the brewhouse process streams into their respective sub-processes runs through the entire OMNIUM design like a recurring theme. The associated optimization of the process steps allows, among other things, to work with a variety of raw materials. As an example, old cereals are to be named, which were previously classified as less suitable for industrialized production processes. Moreover, it is possible to intervene in the individual process steps in such a way that both the yields and all valuable ingredients can be optimized and fluctuating malt qualities can be compensated.

Schlossbrauerei Reckendorf is the first brewery worldwide, which brews with this novel brewhouse since April 2018. “The decision for the OMNIUM brewhouse is essentially based on the much greater flexibility” explained Dominik Eichhorn, brewmaster and managing director of the Schlossbrauerei Reckendorf. Further advantages that have convinced Eichhorn of OMNIUM are the shorter process times and the smaller space required for this new brewhouse design. The practical experience has impressively confirmed the expectations set by Eichhorn in the OMNIUM brewhouse: “Already after a short time it was apparent that the OMNIUM worts were very promising during fermentation. In addition, our beer is noticeably softer and more elegant.”

Small footprint, great technological freedom
The second focus of ZIEMANN HOLVRIEKA at the BrauBeviale is on the sustainable energy supply under the heading “THE 21ST CENTURY BREWERY by ZIEMANN”. With this holistic energy management concept, a brewery can cover largely its heating and cooling demand from renewable energy sources – irrespective of the type of brewhouse and without having to restrict the flexibility of the brewing process. On the contrary: thanks to the regenerative primary energy, a brewmaster can be creative when developing and brewing his own recipes. Decoction brewing methods, extended wort boiling times and lower storage temperature are now economically and environmentally justifiable. Especially in times of an increasing global demand for special beers. This factor is a decisive key factor to success.
The aim of the energy self-sufficient 21st century brewery can also be approached in small steps. Each individual area results in respective benefits, such as the intelligent hot water storage and distribution circuits, which supply all consumers energetically “just in time”. Further steps can be a heat recovery as well as the energy recovery from solar thermal energy, biogas or geothermal energy. The selected heat source is then integrated modularly in the heat cycle. In turn, the regenerative cooling is ensured by proven combined heat power, and cooling systems.
